About

Hi!

My love for gardening started with a Mother’s Day surprise.

Years ago, my oldest son brought home flowers and tomato plants from his school’s Mother’s Day plant sale. The kids and I planted everything together, and I didn’t think much of it at first—until we watched it all grow. We watered, waited, learned, and eventually harvested tomatoes we grew ourselves.

That was it. I was hooked.

Every year after that, my fiancé, Lee, and three kids Christian, Declan, and Scarlett kept the tradition going—flowers, herbs, vegetables—always something new to plant together. Gardening became less about having a “perfect” yard and more about time spent learning, laughing, getting our hands dirty, and celebrating every tiny success (and occasionally mourning a plant that didn’t make it).

After moving to Tennessee, our garden grew right along with us—and honestly, it wouldn’t function without Lee. He is a huge help in the garden, from building beds and hauling soil to fixing whatever I accidentally mess up. The kids garden alongside us too, learning where food comes from, how patience pays off, and that mistakes are just part of the process.

What started as a few Mother’s Day plants has turned into a garden full of flowers, herbs, fruits, and vegetables we use to cook real meals together—grown imperfectly, but with a lot of love.

I started Southern Grown with Jess because gardening can feel overwhelming. There’s so much information out there, and a lot of it makes beginners feel like they’re already doing it wrong. I wanted to create a space where beginners feel comfortable, seasoned gardeners feel welcome, and no one feels judged for learning as they go.

Because mistakes are how we learn.
Gardens don’t need to be perfect—or perfectly aesthetic—to be successful.
If we’re learning, having fun, and reaping what we sow (even in messy, beautiful ways), then we’re doing it right.

If my plants can survive me, there’s hope for anyone!
